HOSTING THIS TRIP
Sam has been a professional photographer for over a decade, starting off locally in England with wedding photography. His lifelong love for Africa eventually had him move out and taking on the role of teaching and managing photography projects in the Greater Kruger region of South Africa. He's seen his images and writing published in National Geographic, Africa Geographic, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Travel Africa and more.
Sam's core belief is that great photography is not hard to come by, but meaningful photography is, and his aim is to teach photographers the potential importance and impact their images can have in aiding and assisting the health and growth of our natural biosphere.
Madikwe Game Reserve is a malaria free Big 5 game reserve. Imagine over seven hundred and fifty square kilometers of untamed bushveld the way it was long before man interfered. The Madikwe Game Reserve, situated in the North West Province of South Africa and run by the North West Parks and Tourism Board, reclaimed over seventy five thousand hectares of farmland and turned it into a wildlife sanctuary that has become home to a wonderful variety of Africa’s animals.
Guests visiting Madikwe have the opportunity to witness this wonderful interaction of game in one of the finest conservation areas in the continent. The reserve has one of the largest elephant populations, all the predators, as well as the endangered wild dog, black and white rhino, buffalo and general plains game. Bird life is abundant. Photographic opportunities are endless, not only from the raised vantage point of your vehicle whilst on game drive but also from the shaded serenity of your lodge’s garden. You’ll never want to put your camera down, so make sure you stock up on extra batteries and memory cards beforehand!
Your accommodation is a converted farm house that's family run and comprises of small groups. Beautiful gardens are an attraction for bird life and a great vantage point for the nearby waterhole - hugely popular amongst animals that frequently visit.
However, the best vantage point is from the underground photographic hide that you have unlimited access to - day or night. Spending time in here in between game drives is a must as it's often frequented by large herds of elephants in the day and the occasional leopard at night.
Meet at OR Tambo airport (Johannesburg) and drive to lodge (approx 4hrs) with a break in between for coffee and leg stretch.
Upon arrival, take a moment to settle in, have a drink and get used to your new surroundings before heading out on your first drive. After your first outing, you'll return back for celebratory drinks and a hearty dinner before bed.
Day Two - Six
Early morning game viewing activities are followed by breakfast back at the lodge. Time in between activities is your free tinme to relax; take a nap, read a book or keep an eye out for birds and other animals that wander by. This is also a perfect time to reflect upon your images, and Sam will be at hand and ready to conduct editing sessions and private critiques. Once again, the afternoon will come by and you'll be off on the search for game before returning back for dinner.
Early morning game drive and breakfast will be followed with checkout and departure.
You'll be transported back to OR Tambo and we aim to arrive early afternoon, so people can catch connecting flights back to Johannesburg or carry on with their travels.
